Spotlight: Deastro

Once in a while I’m going to feature an artist and their work over the course of an entire post. Today featured artist is Deastro.

So who is Deastro? He’s Randy Chabot and his synth-pop electro is among some of my personal favorites. He’s based out of Detroit, signed to Ghostly International and well… I think this video best sums up who he is as an artist and person:

When it comes to things he’s released over time, most people think he only has 2 releases. Actually, he has many more. I was first exposed to Deastro through his Keeper’s album. When I dug deeper, it turned out that he actually had 3 other self-released EPs prior to that. And since releasing Moondagger, he’s also released 5 other EPs. So yeah, theres an entire treasure trove of music to be found if you’re a fan who’s willing to dig for it. But just for convenience, I’ll feature a few here. He originally gave them away for free, so hopefully me sharing them with everyone here won’t raise too many eyebrows on his end.

Deastro’s creative use of synthesizers completely changed my perception of electronic music when I first heard it in 2008 and that sentiment still rings true today. Deastro’s innovation and creativity is among the elite of artists like Neon Indian and Small Black whose originality is unmistakeable and are artists whom you can trust to hold true to their creative ideals even as they grow as artists… a rare trait, to be sure. I’m not entirely sure when he’ll formally release something else, but here’s hoping it won’t be too long.
