A Word About At The Drive-In’s Reunion
Soooo. It looks like At The Drive-In is getting back together and possibly playing some shows, touring and making a new record or some such crap. You know, as a guy who grew up in El Paso and was a part of its ‘scene’ when At The Drive-In was one of the only real bands in town(not counting Sparta or The Mars Volta), I feel I need to say a thing or 2 about this.
First, why? I was under the impression that the members who went their separate ways did so because they hated each other. The only reason they stayed together as long as they did was because they were becoming successful. So, they sucked it up and made music until they felt like they couldn’t anymore. Second, why again? Because a 12-year hiatus would have been too long? Look, this whole situation sounds like an excuse to make a half-assed record for lots of money, selling it and touring festivals in promotion of it. Then again, Sparta‘s last record was awful, Jim Ward’s solo album was about as enjoyable as a paper cut and I’ve never liked The Mars Volta… so being that no one cares anymore, why not, right?
You know, every time a band reunites, it reminds me why sequels rarely work out for movies. You see a movie and you think,’Wow, that was awesome! When’s part 2 coming out?’ So, thinking that the sequel will probably be better than the original, like for instance, The Dark Knight, you rush to the theater 3 years later only to find out that it’s more like Batman Forever. So, why do people keep thinking that these types of reunions and sequels are a good thing when they’re fully aware of being burned before? I have to admit that starry-eyed optimism isn’t exactly one of my stronger qualities in these cases, can’t you tell?
So while it’s slightly possible that At The Drive-In’s reunion won’t be sad, tired and full of shit, it’s not that likely. Tell you what: Just forget I said anything and go listen to In/Casino/Out and think of happier times because chances are, those will be the best times you’ll have with At The Drive-In in the near future. Here, let me get you started:
