Veronica Falls’ Debut Scouts Boyfriends In Graveyards? Yep, Graveyards!

Veronica Falls: Veronica Falls– Veronica Falls is a young band. There is the group taking pictures of itself! Oh you do not want to miss those first steps. All those loose meanderings on a guitar, bright harmony’s recorded… The world could take notice one day, those paintings will be priceless! These infant moments of fledgling bands feel incredible to all the members involved. Pity that I am not the bass player! If I was a contributor, maybe I could share in the hidden magic! I have no such luck; it seems neither do you.

Harsh words I know, but I do have some very good news. Veronica Falls does a good job at creating light poppy songs. The structure of these songs is sound. You have a verse followed by chorus, repeat. The problem is the lyrics generate vile rhymes. “Stephen” is a perfect example of refuse. “Stephen, king of everything! Stephen, you think of everything! Stephen, take off your wedding ring!” I cringed hard and often.

The thing is, these musicians can play competently. I see the earnestness and applaud the attempt. Perhaps they simply have found no muse. They are channeling decent stuff– I hear “The La’s”, “Lush”… 90′s British pop. They simply need to step back. With a little more time they just might do something. This is not that moment, not yet! 4/10

Veronica Falls’ debut record is out now on Slumberland Records.
