Sleeping People: NOTRUF
Sleeping People: NOTRUF– The album cover for Sleeping People‘s EP Notruf is puzzling. It’s a lion head, a human body, a cop-style hat, a laurel wreath, and a color system that defies reality. And those piercing eyes, staring straight into your soul. It is off-putting, perhaps, but it’s memorable.
That’s sort of what Sleeping People’s music is like too. It’s layered and complex, and it doesn’t necessarily obey rules. Time signatures change often. There are no lyrics, nor clear lines between movements; a staccato intro plucks its way into a more frantic guitar riff, which is off-set by a drum beat in a different beat pattern. It’s creates confusion, but not chaos, as the four members of the San Diego band are locked in on one another… And it’s entrancing.
NOTRUF fits nicely into the progressive instrumental math rock category…7.3/10
